Foreign governments sometimes need proof that the signature of a notary on a document is genuine before it can be accepted. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (www.dfat.gov.au), through the Australian Passport Office in Sydney will certify that my signature and stamp on a document is genuine by checking it against a specimen held on file, and print or attach a certificate in the form of an 'authentication' or an 'apostille'.
